The Rio Tinto Big Science Competition

Since the establishment of Horizon International Education Center in 2000, we have been participating in international competitions and activities in order to give our students opportunities to attend cultural and social events and exchange ideas/views with the other students from all over the world.

The Rio Tinto Big Science Competition is one of the most recent science competitions that HIEC students took part. The Rio Tinto Big Science Competition encourages critical thinking and problem solving skills. It is held annually during the third week of May. The competition challenges secondary students from Australian and International schools in Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions. The competition takes 75 minutes. There are 30 multiple choice questions. The questions test scientific thinking and problem solving skills. The competition questions are written by teachers and scientists from all around Australia. Certificates and awards are presented to students to acknowledge their achievement. The certificates awarded are High Distinction, Distinction, Credit, and Participation.

Horizon selected 28 students from each grade to take part in this competition. The competition took place at Horizon Main Campus on May 22, 2008 (Thursday). The results were announced at the beginning of July. Although it was our first time to participate, our students achieved outstanding results. Codanda Devaiah Monappa from G-9 got 29 correct answers (missing only 1). This result qualified him at 4% for a certificate of High Distinction. Yan Myo Kyaw from G-9 answered 28 questions correctly and earned a certificate of Distinction. Mahmood Madha from G-8A answered 27 questions correctly and also earned a certificate of Distinction.

With sincere appreciation, I would like to congratulate the Horizon science teachers who always try their best to encourage students to participate in international competitions, and for their dedicated efforts in training the students for successful outcomes. We hope that our teachers and students will continue to play an active part in participating and winning in many competitions.
