Science
Science, technology and engineering are surrounding us at all times in today’s world. For example, we wake up using talking alarm clocks, dress up in man-made fibers, check TV for weather, listen to radio news, or traffic reports, use electricity to prepare breakfast – all these things we do before even leaving the house early in the morning.
Of course, this science around us did not just come out of the air itself. Behind every great invention is a great inventor, an innovator, a scientist or an engineer. All of these gadgets and new technologies, which make our lives easier and more enjoyable, began as an idea.
Thinking about the science that surrounds us, it is clear that science
is not only about labs and white coats. It is also about creativity
and ingenuity, solving problems and dreaming of making the impossible
a reality.
Junior Science Week
From August 11th to 15th 2008, Horizon Science Department teacher Mrs. Yadanar organized a thrilling and fun-filled Junior Science Week with the help of many other teachers. Students from grade 1 to grade 5 participated in various games, solved riddles and answered science knowledge challenges.
Science Week is a great promotion of science for the public. The week-long program of events aims to make science more interesting and accessible to children.
Games
Students in small groups from the same grade competed with each other at break times. Below are some games and their rules or description.
Name of the game |
Description or rules of the game |
Skeletal system |
Each group has to assemble the human skeletal system. The group who finishes first is the winner |
Crossword puzzle |
Students have to find words from word clusters. The group who finds all the words the fastest is the winner |
Jigsaw Puzzle |
The team of students who place all the puzzles together first is the winner |
Life cycle |
The group that can complete the life cycles fastest is the winner |
Feely Bag |
Individual students have their hands in a bag and guess what they are touching. The group of students who can guess the most items correctly is the winner. |
Board Game |
Teams of students move forward on a board by correctly answering the science questions. The group who reaches the finish position first is the winner. |
Classification |
The group who classify the animal pictures appropriately first is the winner. |
Animals and their young |
The group that correctly matches the animal’ pictures with the names of their young first is the winner. |
Animals’ sounds |
The group that correctly matches all the animals and their sounds first is the winner. |
Concentration Game
(Metal Snake Challenge) |
The person who reaches the end point without touching the wire is the winner. |
Body Parts |
The group that correctly labels all the body parts of different animals first is the winner. |
Solar system |
The group who can place the planets in order the quickest is the winner. |
Fishing with magnets |
The group that catches the most fish is the winner. |
Riddles
Students were challenged with brain teasing riddles that were displayed along the school path each day during the week. Ten new riddles were given each day. The student who solved the most riddles than the others in his/her class won a prize. The prizes were then awarded at the next morning assembly. Get a taste of these fun riddles…

Science Knowledge Competition
The Head of Science Department, Mr. Adem organized the Science Knowledge Competition to challenge students. Students in same grade groups competed by answering tough science questions on-the-spot.
There were three groups from each class. Fifteen (15) multiple choice questions were displayed via a projector in during the 7th period in the computer lab. All the students did very well and it was often difficult to choose a winning group since they answered simultaneously. Therefore, 5 extra questions had to be asked to choose the ultimate winner group.
Below are the winners for each grade:
Grade 1- Group number 2 from Grade-1A
Kevin
Kaung Zin Ye`
Min Nay Paing
Grade 2- Group number 4 from Grade-2B
