What is Mathemania?
Mathemania is a Puzzle challenge for Secondary and High level students in Myanmar. This event is organized by Horizon International Education Center Math Department both in Yangon and Mandalay. Participants take a written puzzle test for one and half hours at Horizon International Education Center.
Purpose:
It is intended to assess students visual skills, adeptness at connecting pictures spatially, figuring out patterns among numbers and pictures, cracking codes, solving Sudoku puzzlesetc. This test consists of 20 questions of difficulty levels.Mathemania has gained its popularity in 2006 when it was initiated for the first time in Myanmar by HIEC. It is open for Grade 5 to Grade 12 students. Exam date is 1st of Nov for secondary school students and 2nd of November for high school students
Rules and Regulations
- Mathemania is an annual puzzle contest which consists of different kind of IQ questions of different level organized by Horizon Int’l Education Center (HIEC) Math Department in both Yangon and Mandalay. The purpose of this contest is to boost enthusiasm towards Math and strengthen the critical thinking skills of students.
- Anyone from primary, secondary or high school level can participate in this contest.
- Primary level participants are the students who are attending Grade 3 and Grade 4 during 2008-2009 academic year. Secondary level participants are the students who are attending Grade 5 to Grade 7 during 2008-2009 academic year. High level participants are the participants who are attending Grade 8 to Grade 12 during 2008-2009 academic year.
- For the State schools Primary level participants are the students who are attending Grade 4 and Grade 5 during 2008-2009 academic year. Secondary level participants are the students who are attending Grade 6 to Grade 8 during 2008-2009 academic year. High level participants are the participants who are attending Grade 9 to Grade 11 during 2008-2009 academic year.
- A contestant must submit two recent photos and special application form with the required information filled until Application Deadline (27th of October 4:00 pm). The application form is available in HIEC office and on HIEC website, (http://www.horizon.com.mm/mathemania/). The Application form can be duplicated.
- Applicants are required to pay an application fee of 1000 Kyats.
- Every Friday of the Admission week (from 6th of October to 27th of October) after submitting the application form, the applicant will receive an Identity card (ID card) that will give the right to participate in the contest. This ID card and NRC card are needed to be shown before the test.
- Students should sit in their appropriate seats according to ID card number.
- Since the contest will start at 10:00 am sharp on the Contest day, no late students will be allowed to sit for the competition. For that reason participants are suggested to come at least 30 minutes earlier before the competition starts.
- The contest will be on 1st of November for the Secondary level participants and on 2nd of November for the Primary and the High level participants. If the number of the students will exceed 600 in each category the participants will be divided in two sessions for each level. In that case the First session will start at 10:00 am and the Second session will start at 12:00 pm on contest days.
- The test consists of 20 puzzles and it requires some basic math skills like addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
- Primary, Secondary or High school students will take different level question according to their levels. The questions will be either in English or Burmese depending on the language the participant chooses.
- The Booklets with sample questions can be obtained from HIEC office. Some sample questions will also be available on our website, (http://www.horizon.com.mm/mathemania/) . Booklets will cost 1000 Myanmar kyats.
- No books, calculators, computers, cell-phones or other electronic devices are allowed to be used during the contest. Students are permitted to use only writing tools and eraser.
- No participant is allowed to go around, talk to other participants, share writing tools and erasers during the contest.
- For possible technical mistakes on test paper the participant has the right to ask for a new one. For that reason students are suggested to go through the paper before starting to solve the puzzles. For possible change the Responsible teacher will be in charge.
- Contestants can ask questions only from Responsible teachers after raising their hands. Students are not allowed to shout or ask questions loudly.
- Contestants will remain in their seats until all test papers have been collected, regardless of whether they have finished the test.
- Each correct answer will earn points specified next to the puzzles. In case of a draw, the number of highest scoring puzzles solved will be considered.
- Time range allowed is 1 hour and 30 minutes for each level.
- Results of the contest will be announced 2 weeks after the test (17th of November 2008). The answers of the contest will be posted at (http://www.horizon.com.mm/mathemania/) after announcing the winners (18th of November 2008).
- There will be 3 grand prize winners for each level given in the table below and the top 20 scorers will be receiving special prizes.

- Prizes will be given during Award Ceremony.(23rd of December.)
- HIEC Math Department holds the right to disqualify any competitor who violates the above mentioned rules and conditions or any ethical rules during the test.
- To overcome the traffic problem parents will not be allowed to park their vehicles inside or nearby areas of HIEC.
- All participants are expected to have read and accepted the above rules and conditions.

1. What is Mathemania?
Mathemania is an annual contest organized by the Math Departments of the Horizon International Education Center (HIEC). It is for the Myanmar schoolchildren and consists of various kinds of puzzles with the different levels of difficulty. The purpose of this contest is to boost the student enthusiasm towards Math and strengthen their critical thinking skills in Myanmar. It has been organized both in Yangon and Mandalay since 2006.
2. Can I participate in this contest if I do not live in Yangon or Mandalay?
Although it is organized by the HIEC in Yangon and Mandalay, every student across Myanmar can join the contest.
3. Who can participate in this contest?
Any student from primary, secondary or high school can participate in this contest. Please, see the table below.

4. How do we register to participate in the contest?
a. Get an application form from the HIEC offices either in Yangon or Mandalay or download it from the HIEC website: http://www.horizon.com.mm/mathemania/index.html
(The application form can be duplicated.)
b. Fill in the Application Form.
c. Attach your two recent photos to the form.
d. Return it to the HIEC office with the registration fee of 1000 (one thousand) kyats.
Later, you will receive a Photo ID to show on the day of the contest.
5. I am a Horizon student. Can I register for free?
The registration fee covers the administrative costs for processing the application. Therefore, regardless of your affiliation with the school, you will have to pay the registration fee.
6. What does the “Exam Language” in Application Form mean?
Since not every student understands English well, the HIEC Math Department has decided to offer the question paper in two languages, Myanmar and English. Therefore, every student is able to join the contest regardless of their language problems.
While filling in the Application Form, students should mark the language option they prefer. If a participant wants to take the test in Burmese, s/he should tick “Burmese”. If the participant wants to take the test in English, s/he should tick “English”.
7. Can I change my choice of language after I have received my ID card?
Since the question papers are printed in a limited number based on the registration record, it is impossible to change your option.
8. Can we apply online?
For technical reasons, online application can not be accepted this year, 2008. Online application will be available next year, 2009.
9. Why are there two sessions?
If the number of the students exceeds the capacity of the school venue, students will be divided into two sessions for better administration of the contest.
10. If the contestant was identified as a first-session-exam taker, can s/he sit for the exam in the second session?
No. Every student will be given his schedule for the contest when they receive their ID cards. Unfortunately, you will not be allowed to join the contest another time if you miss your session. Please, make sure that you get your schedule when you receive your ID card.
11. When is the deadline for application?
Application Deadline is October 27, 2008, 4:00 pm.

13. Is the contest’s date fixed every year?
The contest dates might change every year.
14. How can we learn the results of the contest?
The results of the Mathemania contest will be announced 2 weeks after the test. You can directly contact the HIEC office or access the Horizon website www.horizon.com.mm to find out your results.
15. What is the Mathemania prize?
There are 3 grand prize winners for each level given in the table below and the top 20 scorers will receive special prizes.

17. Are the prizes the same every year?
No. Since Mathemania is getting popular over the time and the number of participants are increasing, to make the contest more challenging HIEC is planning to change the prizes every year.
18. Can we get sample questions concerning the Mathemania?
Yes. You can get the sample questions from the HIEC website www.horizon.com.mm. You can also buy a special Booklet with sample questions.
19. Where can we buy the Booklet and how much does it cost?
You can buy the Booklet at HIEC. A booklet costs 1000 kyats.
