HCS Purpose
Founded to carry out social work activities, Horizon Community Service (HCS) includes students from different grades at Horizon International Education Center. HCS was established in June 2008 after the Nargis storm devastated much of the area around Yangon. The main purpose of HCS is to extend help and support to the society in which we live.
Our goal is to reach the poor, young or old, who need help and to let them know that they are not forgotten or alone. We hope to benefit their lives with our care and understanding.
On the other hand, HCS realizes the importance of sharing to build a strong community. Serving the community makes students more responsible citizens. We believe that carrying out the community service activities is as significant as academic achievements. Moreover, HCS aims to support its members in their transition from childhood to responsible adulthood by encouraging their social development and helping them engage more fully in society.
HCS Activities
HCS held a fund raising BBQ sandwich sale every morning during one week in June. Juice and toast were sold during break times. The funds were combined with Int’l Food Day donations and were sent to the cyclone victims.
In order to respond to urgent needs after the Nargis cyclone, HCS organized International Food Day on July 12, 2008 at Horizon Main Campus. Foods were cooked and sold by Horizon teachers and parents. Auctions, games, and other interesting activities were enjoyed. The funds collected from this event were donated to the A-Ma-Ka Primary School in Patoke Village in Kawt Hmu Township. This school was extensively damaged by the cyclone, and with the help of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sports, HCS could choose this school to receive the donations.
Before the event, HCS members delivered invitations to several Embassies. Senior authorities such as - the Ambassador, 1st & 2nd Secretaries, Protocol Officer, Counselor and Brigadier General- from Pakistan Embassy, Bangladesh Embassy, Royal Thai Embassy and Italy Embassy attended the fund raiser.
HCS collected nearly Kyats 1,700,000/- from the event. Moreover, the Horizon Family also donated cash in the amount of 6,300,000/- and good second hand clothing, mugs, plates, etc for the cyclone victims. HCS members, teachers and parents went to Patoke Village on July 13, 2008 to donate the collected cash and materials.
International Food Day activities
HCS members visit the Boys Orphanage every three weeks. The members are very encouraging to the children- members play games with them, share knowledge, and teach them basic English and Burmese. School supplies and gifts such as snacks, fruit and drinks are donated to the orphanage. The boys visited the Main Campus on ------- to tour the school facilities. The members enjoy fulfilling their purpose of caring and sharing with people less fortunate. The effort of the members to put a smile on the children’s faces is indeed rewarding.
A trip is made to the Girls Orphanage by HCS members every three weeks. School supplies and some donations are given to this orphanage. HCS members invited them to Horizon Main Campus, but due to their busy schedule on the weekends, they were not able to visit us. However, we hope this will come to reality in the near future.
- Visiting the Home for the Aged
Meeting the aged people and making them feel cared for was a touching experience for HCS members on -------. HCS donated cash, books and fruit to them. The members also visited the bed-ridden elderly and spoke caringly to them. They celebrated birthdays together too. The people gave their blessings and good wishes in return for the gifts and care the members showed.
The elderly people shared their past experiences with the members. The most interesting experience was the old ladies singing and dancing happily for the members. They want the members to visit them often.
Every Friday, HCS arranges a movie night from 3:15pm to 5:00pm in the main computer room. Students who wish to watch the movie can buy a ticket from one of the HCS members. The ticket price is 1000ks per movie and includes juice and popcorn.
