Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much are the fees?

A complete description of the fee structure is given according to the level inquired, book fees, uniform and the book fees also mentioned.

2. How about the teachers? Are they expats or local teachers?
Horizon school believes in the importance of having professional teachers who really enjoy teaching and have a sense of affection towards kids.
Our teachers are truly international professionals. There are several teachers from Turkey who are mainly teaching math, science and computer skills. This is easily understood since the managers of Horizon are Turkish nationals.
Most English classes are being taught by native English teachers, or advanced or qualified non-natives either foreign or local. Since our first year, we have teachers from 21 countries (America, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Egypt, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Moldavia, Myanmar, Philippines, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey,  Uzbekistan, Yemen) This makes our school quite unique.
In general, Horizon management focuses on hiring the best and most qualified teachers regardless of their country of origin.

4. Tell us about Horizon management? Who are the principals?
Currently, almost all Horizon Centers are managed by Turkish nationals as they have been the driving force behind Horizon’s existence. During all these years (this is the 9th year by the way), there have been Myanmar teachers in Kindergarten. Currently, two Kindergartens are managed by Daw Kalayar Chaw, a Myanmar national.
Yangon Main Campus principal Mr. Safak Deliismail is a long-time serving member of Horizon Centers, with an accumulation of 10 years experience in teaching and management.
Mr. Ahmed, Mandalay Campus is also a long-time serving member; with seven years dedicated to educational excellence. Horizon Mandalay is the leading international school in Mandalay.

5. Is this school associated with any school or college abroad?
Horizon is an independent private school and in the real sense it is not associated with any other school. However, we have a strong relationship with schools in the US and Australia.
In 2005, an affiliation agreement was signed with two schools in Australia, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne. This means Horizon students can continue their education at one of those schools if they desire.
In 2006, Horizon managers connected with Putnam Science Academy, a prestigious secondary boarding school for boys in Connecticut, US; hence we anticipate sending some students there in the near future to study in grade-9.

6. Accreditation?
Horizon is not accredited yet, but seeking accreditation from IB organization, which is a Geneva-Europe based accreditation organization; currently one of the most prestigious. We hope to receive accreditation in 2-3 years to offer an International Baccalaureate Diploma Program from IB organization.
Accreditation only serves now to ensure the quality of a relatively unknown school. We at Horizon are confident about our quality and standards, and we welcome any parents to visit us at any time to observe lessons and talk to teachers and students.

7. What kind of curriculum is used here?
Horizon uses its own curriculum which is a flexible combination of the American, British and Singaporean curriculums. On the other hand, our curriculum is modified in such a way so that students can sit for “O” level and “A” level exams offered by the British Council here. Then they may wish to go to Singapore, Australia or England. We believe that there is no significant difference between the curriculums. The key is to equip students with a strong background in the three core subjects of English, Math and Science as the three most important core subjects.

8. How is the school managed? Is there a board of trustees or something?
Horizon is owned by a local individual who strongly believes in the importance of education. There is no board of trustees yet, but it is planned to have one in the future. At the moment, policies are being made and decisions taken by a small committee- comprising the local owner, the principals and some of the foreign teachers.

9. What is the student admission process?
Students are admitted through a placement test, which has three phases. The first phase is an English language test which aims to access the prospective student's English competency. Then, the applicant is given an IQ test. Finally, there is a brief interview with either the principal or one of his assistants, which aims to evaluate the applicant’s spoken English level.
Of course, the placement test differs in difficulty in accordance with the desired grade. After all these steps, a grade is proposed to the applicant. This proposed grade could be the grade parents are wanting to place their child in, or one grade lower or one higher.   In case the child is weak in English, he or she will most probably be placed one grade lower than his/her actual grade.

10. Do you provide transportation?
The school provides limited transportation for a fee on a term basis. Of course, this depends on the pick-up\return location and seat availability.

11. What is the student population and diversity?

14. Can my child go abroad for further studies after studying here?

Of course he can. Actually, this is what we aim for; this is where we put the greater emphasis.
Our campuses hold to an English only policy.
Students use English textbooks in every subject except Burmese. This is to ensure that students attain an advanced level of English so that they can achieve their dreams. Students in the senior high school (grades 9 to 12) are in a preparatory program in preparation for the “O” level, “A” level and IELTS exams. Whichever route they eventually take, either the American or the British, we do our best to coach them for success. Actually we believe we are very strong in English, math and science, thanks to our subject teachers.
