Boarding life can be both challenging and rewarding. The challenges lie in the effort involved in creating a caring and family-like community. The rewards lie in the personal growth that students experience and in the deep and abiding friendships that they develop.
HD is a community of students who respect and care about one another and teachers who are exceptionally well prepared to maintain a safe and inviting place for students living away from home. In the dorm, students from many cultural and religious backgrounds work together to create an atmosphere conducive to learning and personal growth.
In the family-like atmosphere that is fostered, teachers enjoy being a part of the development of students beyond the classroom — and both students and teachers thrive on the relationships that result. They meet for breakfast; spend the day in classes and the afternoon in sports and other activities. Dinners are enjoyed together, and evenings are for quiet study. Weekends provide time to relax, or play.

Dormitory is a place for study and living. No rule book or manual could possibly cover all contingencies or list all inappropriate behavior. Therefore, the rules are broadly stated. There are times when a student’s actions go beyond what is written here. HD will provide consequences for any behavior deemed unacceptable, whether specified or not. In order to maintain a good environment for study and daily life, all the residents must observe the following regulations.
- The dorm program serves students in grades 6 to 12 from HIEC.
- Good common sense, respect, and consideration for others and their property should be practiced daily.
- Students may visit their families, once a week on weekends for a maximum of 2 days, with the permission of the dorm director.
- Weekends begin on Friday after all final obligations are completed. Students must return to the dorm no later than 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
- Clothing should be neat, clean and in good repair. Students should not wear clothing with sexual, alcohol, nicotine, drugs references or other offensive references.
- Each room is provided with a bed, a desk, a bathroom, and a wardrobe. Students should bring an alarm clock, desk lamp, towels, and washcloths.
- Students must keep their rooms clean and orderly and should also clean their beds, bathroom, and surroundings everyday. This will be checked by the HD director every weekday morning before breakfast
CHECKING TIME: 7:30 am
- No nails or tacks may be driven into the walls. No writing is allowed on the walls, wood-work or on either side of the doors. No climbing on walls, roofs, or trees.
- Any damage done to the room or furniture must be paid for by the room occupants.
- Students are expected to use no more electric light in their room than is necessary; to turn off all lights when they leave their rooms.
- No loud noise shall occur in the building at any time, including during study hours.
- Quiet hours will be observed after 10 pm. At 10:30 pm each student must be in his assigned bed with the lights out. A bed check will be made nightly by dormitory staff.
- Students may not leave the campus unless they are accompanied by an authorized staff.
- When students wish to go to the local stores for personal reasons, permission must first be obtained from dorm staff.
- Smoking and the use of other tobacco products is prohibited. Lighters and matches are prohibited. Violation of this rule will result in immediate dismissal from the dormitory.
- The use or possession of alcoholic beverages and/or illegal drugs is prohibited and will result in immediate dismissal from the dormitory.
- Gambling is not allowed at any time.
- Possession of fireworks or weapons of any kind is not permitted and will result in immediate dismissal from the dormitory.
- Willful damage or vandalism to dormitory property or another individual's property are not allowed and will result in immediate dismissal from the dorm.
- Any property found in the dormitory building or in the garden must be handed in to the dorm staff.
- All accidents should be reported immediately to the dorm staff.
- Students are encouraged NOT to swap property.
- HD has a safe to hold students’ cash, NRC or any ID cards, and other valuables. Students should never have large amounts of cash in their rooms. HD is not responsible for items that are lost or stolen.
- To ensure a safe exit from the room in the event of a fire, furniture and decorations must be arranged so that the entire room is clearly visible from the doorway and the entrance is not obstructed.
A PENALTY RECORD is a record of discipline actions by dorm students based on points. A discipline problem will be equivalent to 1 point. HD director and staff observations will be taken into account. They will note the discipline problem and give a point if necessary. If a student’s score totals 10 or above in a week, he will be given the first WARNING, and the matter will be discussed with the HIEC vice principal.
On the 2nd WARNING, a conference with the student will be held by the HD director and vice principal. The student will be given a one day suspension from school. Under these circumstances a student will not be allowed to attend regular classes and will be monitored by teachers.
If a 3rd WARNING is required the student will be dismissed from the DORM. THERE WILL BE NO RECONSIDERATION, or EXCEPTIONS.
Penalty Scores are given for the following discipline problems:

- Not complying with a written DORM rule
- Disrespect toward the HD director/staff either orally or verbally
- Not performing daily/routine duties
- Not listening to the warnings given by the HD director/staff
