What is ‘A’ level?

- ‘A’ level is the advanced level GCE qualification
- ‘A’ level courses immediately follow on from ‘O’ level courses
- ‘AS’ and ‘A2’ are two qualifications for a full ‘A’ level endorsement
‘AS’ = Advanced Subsidiary
‘A2’ = 2nd half of ‘A’ levels
- Examinations can be taken after two years of ‘A’ level study
- A pre-university requirement
- Available in broad range of subjects covering the whole curriculum
- The new qualification comprises six units per subject
- Most candidates complete preparation for two and four subject exams by the age of eighteen
- Grades range from A to E; with U being unclassified

Information on Modular ‘A’ levels
- Each ‘A’ level subject is subdivided into six Units
- A wide range of Units are available
- Students can choose from various combinations of Units
- Each Unit is separately assessed
- Duration of unit exams lasts for 1.5hr to 2 hrs
